Let's Learn About Dr. Scott Barnett
Howdy folks. So how does one wind up making a strange podcast about how tiny molecules kill you? Glad you ask. I didn’t always plan on being a science podcaster. It wasn’t until I accepted the fact that I was never going to be an astronaut or a male model that settled into my new role as a scientist. In 2017 I received my Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, and now I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Medical College of Wisconsin. As to the podcast? Well, I decided to create this podcast because: (1) It's a socially acceptable way to explore my low-grade narcissism, and (2) The body is just this awesome and insane ball of molecules struggling against entropy, so why not share my fascination of Pharmacology and Toxicology with that small contingent of the world that finds such macabre subject matter as interesting as I do.
Fun Facts About Me:
I graduated from The University of Oregon in 2000 with a B.S. in Psychology. After finishing school I took the next logical step in my education....I learned to blow stuff up...in the Marine Corps. After six years of talking on a radio to helicopters and jets I decided it was time to try something new. I left that fine organization in 2006 as a Captain, and in an attempt to clear my head while pontificating the next phase of my life, my brother and I rode our bicycles from Sydney to Perth, Australia. To be clear, we didn't break any land speed records during our trip (it took us five months to ride 3,500 miles); however, despite our limited aptitude for distance cycling it was an incredible experience and I am hoping to return to the 'island continent' in the future. Following that adventure I earned a B.S. in Biochemistry to prepare myself for med school, but as it turns out I loved the monotonous solitude of pipetting fluids from one tube to another so much that I decided that a Ph.D. was more my style.....so here we are.
In my spare time I like to take photographs. If you are so inclined you can see my work here: Scott Barnett Photography (link) . Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions or comments about the show. email@example.com
The Hiatus: Close followers of the show probably think that I’ve died or moved onto other things. In reality, I needed some “me” time during 2017 and most of 2018 in order to finish my Ph.D. (turns out it’s a fair bit of work to write a 400-page dissertation), find a new job, move across the country, and oh…..yeah…..father twins (ok, my wife the real work there). Long story short, “Scotty is tired,” but I think I’m ready to wander back into the breach, so look for new episodes in late 2018.
